Born: March 25, 1896; Died: March 24, 1973
For gallant conduct and extraordinary heroism while attached to the U.S.S. Chestnut Hill, on the occasion of the explosion and subsequent
fire on board the United States submarine chaser 219, On October 9, 1918, Schmidt, saw a man hanging on a line from the bow of the 219.
The man’s legs were partially blown off. Schmidt jumped overboard, swam to the subchaser and carried him from the bow to the stern where
a member of the 219‘s crew helped him land the man on the afterdeck of the subchaser. Schmidt then endeavored to pass through the
flames amidships to get to another man who was seriously burned. This he was unable to do, but when the injured man fell overboard and
drifted to the stern of the chaser, Schmidt helped him aboard.

While in the field Dr. Diodati was constanly under fire. He was gassed twice and wounded 3 other
times. He was in battle at Locon, Pacut wood and via Chappelle. He was gassed at Annequin but
remained at his post. He was wounded at Lillers in the Bethune sector. He was gassed again and
wounded by shrapnel at Marquain . On March 16, 1919 he was awarded the British Military Cross for gallantry.
The award was presented to him personally by King George of Great Britain.
