On this page we will look back at life in the city during the war years. Here we will provide the visitor with the stories making the news, what was happening in sports and entertainment, city politics, the social scene and the prominent people at the time. We will also recount the events occurring in the war on that day. So, check back each day for new editions.

TODAY IN PHILADELPHIA –  MONDAY, APRIL 10, 1916

There will be clear, fair skies over the city today. The temperature will be a bit brisk in the morning but will rise to about 45° this afternoon with the low tonight near 37°. Temperatures are expected to become continually warmer as the week progresses.

Today I thought I would present something a little different than the daily news report. So here is a recipe from the war years that you might like to try for lunch.

Marrowbone Sandwiches:

Remove all meat from two marrowbones;

Into each end of the bones press some bread crumbs;

Roll the bones into a thin cloth;

Boil for 1 hour;

Allow to cool then remove the marrow;

Rub it to a paste, season highly with salt, pepper, or other seasons to your taste;

Serve on a crisp hot browned cracker or toasted bread. Enjoy Lunch!

And for you new mothers below is a feeding schedule produced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a healthy baby of 18 to 24 months:

7:00 am – 8 to 10 ounces of milk; 1 piece of zwiebach, toast or dried bread.

9:00 am – 2 ounces of orange juice.

10:00 am – 2 tablespoonsful of cereal; 1 cup of milk.

2:00 pm – 6 ounces of broth; 1 tablespoonful of meat; 1 tablespoonful of vegetable (spinach); 1 piece of stale bread; 1 to 2 tablespoonful of baked apple.

6:00 pm – 1 ½ tablespoonful of cereal; 6 to 8 ounces of milk; toast or bread.

10:00 pm – 8 ounces of milk, (may be omitted).

Under no circumstances should your baby be given cakes, candy, doughnuts, pickles, coffee, tea, soft drinks or beer especially during hot weather.
